Railcraft Furniture Collection

Something from the distant past for generations to enjoy!
Richard Nelson - - Railcraft Furniture / Railcraft Collections

In the late 1800s the British Empire set out to connect the African colonies by steam railway system. Necessary to this task was the cutting of ancient virgin hardwood forests that were growing when the Mayflower sailed to America. The railway timbers produced from this harvest were chosen for their unsurpassed weather resistance.

Naturally and beautifully weathered by the harsh African climate for up to 100 years, these untreated timbers include Rhodesian Teak, Ironwood, Masasa, Chamfuti, Panga-Panga and other slow growing hardwoods. Furniture and carvings made from these rustic recycled woods by Southern African artisans are associated with prestigious lodges and guesthouses of South Africa and discriminating collectors worldwide.

Railcraft Collections makes it possible for you to obtain furniture and accessories made from exotic woods that are steeped in steam railroad history. Because of the popularity of this furniture and the limited supply of recycled timbers, collectors who wish to invest in these legacy pieces should act quickly.

The use of weather resistant hardwoods for railway timbers was common practice in the late 1800s in the African colonies. Of course, it would be unthinkable to use these exotic woods for such mundane uses today. We are pleased that these timbers are being rescued and transformed into one-of-a-kind pieces to be handed down from generation to generation.
